Edwards Plateau

from Smokestacks by Brandee Simone

/

about

It’s a long rambling journey
Through Edwards Plateau
The car all packed up, back in 2004
Drove south through Las Cruces
And east toward the Gulf
But Edwards Plateau took us miles off course

When you’re driving on the highway
Two hundred miles from San Antonio
The sky will start running
The same colors as the road
Until you can’t see the difference
Between the Earth and the sky
And your mind will start wandering
And you think you’re gonna die

You never know
Just how wide this world truly is
Until you’ve driven lost
Through the width of Texas

Tucson, Arizona
Flat yards and red sand
And an ancient grandfather
Still wielding his hand
He asks for forgiveness
For his wandering eye
And his wanderlust that took him
From rain to dry

And eastward to Edwards, no green can be seen
Just dinosaur fossils in the ground, being reamed
And every so often when we fill our tanks
It’s killing and drilling that we have to thank

Oh, you never know
Just how wide this world truly is
Until you’ve driven lost
Through the width of Texas
